Tuition

Crispian was Professor of Trumpet at the Guildhall School of Music, London from 1976 until 1990 when, as Britain's first full time trumpet soloist, his schedule necessitated withdrawing from the responsibilities of regular teaching. Many of his former pupils have subsequently had distinguished musical careers.

He gives Masterclasses at Universities and Colleges to some of which [such as the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, Cardiff] he returns regularly as a Resident Visiting Tutor. He also encourages enthusiasts to visit his private studio where they can see, hear and play original 18th and 19th century instruments from his collection, several of which belonged to eminent players. He believes that performing “early” music should involve an awareness of the capabilities of actual trumpets [see the “Instruments” page on this site] known to have been used at a particular time.

He encourages students of the modern trumpet to produce a pleasing, unforced tone over the full range of their instrument, and to develop a physically relaxed technique which instils confidence rather than bravado!

In 2006 he participated in the first interactive internet link-up from the Royal Academy of Music, London giving a lesson “live” to pupils in Miami State University, Florida. He is presently developing a similar service for instruction or discussion in a private tutorial format over the internet.
